“Good day,” Edward said to the butler as he handed him his card. Charles did the same. “We are here to see Mr. Henry Williams, if he is available.”
“Yes, sir. I will enquire if he is at home. You may wait in here.”
They were shown into an elegant parlour, which had a spectacular view of the harbour.
“Aidan appears to have prospered,” Charles remarked.
“I would not mind such a place myself,” Edward confessed. Then he noticed the portrait of Aidan with a lady and two small children.
The butler returned. “I am sorry, sirs. It would seem Mr. Williams has gone to collect Mrs. Williams and her children from tea at the Governor’s mansion.”
“Tea at the Governor’s mansion?” Edward asked aloud, hoping he had heard wrong.
“Yes, sir,” he said. “Every Wednesday she meets with the Benevolent Society there. I gather they were entertaining some English ladies today.”
“Thank you for your help,” Edward said, almost pulling Charles from the house.
A groom came running with the horses and as soon as he was mounted, Edward set his heels to the animal's sides without looking to see if Winslow followed. In seconds, he could hear Charles close behind. Neither said a word; they were galloping too fast for conversation and it was unnecessary. Edward knew they both realized the impending disaster, and did not wish Anjou to be alone for the discovery. Could fate be so cruel?
When Edward and Charles arrived at the mansion, they discovered the tea had finished some half-hour past. No one seemed upset or acted as if anything out of the ordinary had occurred, but they were informed the visiting ladies had gone to shop in the town for some of Bermuda’s famous hats.
“Shall we look for them?” Edward asked.
“I believe so. I do think we must tell her or leave as soon as we may.”
“I wish I knew what the circumstance was. It would ease my conscience. However, he clearly has a family now, and I cannot imagine your sister would try to separate them.”
“No. I imagine my father can arrange an annulment since they were married by a Catholic priest.”
“Can it be done quietly?”
“I hope so, given the marriage was secret to begin with. The Church of England would not recognize the marriage if it was challenged. I suspect it might have been intentional on my father’s part.”
“True, but how will your sister feel about it?”
“I cannot say. Perhaps we should set sail tomorrow and put Aidan behind us.”
“If it is your wish, I will make arrangements,” Edward suggested.
“It is,” Charles replied.
“I believe I see the ladies coming from the milliner’s.”
Waving, Charles attracted Anjou and Sarah's attention. The two men walked towards them.
“Is your business completed?” Sarah asked.
“As much as it can be,” Charles said vaguely.
“Would you mind helping me shop for gifts for the boys? I believe your sister is fagged.”
“I would be happy to. Harris, would you mind seeing my sister back to the house?”
“Not at all. My lady?” Edward looked to Anjou.
She took his arm, but was clearly distracted.
